The City of Tega Cay is excited to announce a new community engagement opportunity for students. This program, titled The Extra Mile, will provide opportunity for students to contribute to their community through service projects. Participants completing a minimum of 50 hours of service will be formally recognized at the May City Council meeting.
The program is open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors attending Fort Mill High School or home school in Tega Cay. Students with 50 or more volunteer hours earned during the 2016-2017 academic school year on projects approved by the City will be officially recognized at the Council meeting in May.
"This program was created in order to provide students an opportunity to be involved in the community where they live in a very constructive, tangible way" stated City Manager Charlie Funderburk. "Councilmember Jennifer Stalford had forwarded us information from a similar program in the City of Bluffton and we knew right away this would be a great program for our kids here in Tega Cay."
Eagle Scouts have proposed and completed projects in the City such as building and installing a fitness station at Lookout Park, weather proofing the walking trail bridge on the Duke Power Line trail, and completing a walking trail from the pedestrian pathway to the power line trail in the greenway located beside Trail Head Park. While these are larger scale projects, the City has comprised a list of needs that include anything from washing patrol vehicles and spreading mulch to participating in community events. Students are also welcome to propose projects they would like to complete.
Mayor Sheppard stated “We are excited to engage our kids in the community as I believe civic service at this early age can help shape our future leaders.”
