Based on the report over the weekend regarding the confirmed travel associated Zika virus in York County, SCDHEC has recommended mosquito treatment in portions of the City as a precautionary measure. York County is contracting a licensed pesticide company to treat the areas recommended by SCDHEC. That company will be in our area at some point in the near future as directed by York County staff. They will be applying the treatment in the early morning hours while in the City. As a reminder, we encourage our residents to take additional precautions to prevent mosquito bites and eliminating conditions that are favorable for mosquitoes in their own yards by:
• Using insect repellents.
• Ensuring screens are placed over windows.
• Wearing long-sleeves and pants or permethrin-treated clothes.
• Emptying any items that can hold water both inside and outside dwellings at least once a week. These items include tires, buckets, toys, trash containers and water bowls for pets.
If you have any questions or for more information regarding transmission, symptoms, and prevention please visit the SCDHEC website: http://www.scdhec.gov/Health/DiseasesandConditions/InfectiousDiseases/InsectAnimalBorne/ZikaVirus/ or contact SCDHEC at (803) 898-7769.
