Signature Waste has announced they can no longer collect glass in the recycle carts effective immediately.
Signature Waste utilizes Sonoco, a recycling facility in Charlotte, to process all recyclable items. Sonoco is a nationwide recycling processor who notified Signature Waste of the need to eliminate glass from the materials brought to the facility for processing due to the increased cost of commingled and cross contaminated glass breakage with other recyclable materials. Beginning immediately, any recycle material loads brought to the facility containing glass will be discarded as contamination and will be hauled to the landfill. The same is true for any other material not listed on Signature Waste’s website as recyclable. Approximately 70 tons of material is taken to Sonoco on a monthly basis for recycling from Tega Cay. However, only 50% of that is actually recyclable materials. It is imperative the recycle list is followed to help keep recycle cost down and ensure material sent from Tega Cay is recycled.
We understand how this will impact many of our residents who participate in the recycle service. The City is exploring alternate options with Signature Waste and other partners for a long-term solution. In the meantime, we encourage you to continue recycle your glass items by taking them to the nearest York County Convenience Center (Baxter) or any of their collection and recycle locations.
