Catawba Park & Tega Cay Forever
With the tremendous growth we have experienced in our recreation programs and use of our current recreational facilities, it was the City’s vision to create a new destination that will provide park goers with a multitude of amenities. These include baseball/softball fields, multi-purpose fields for soccer and lacrosse, a dog park, vast open spaces for picnic gatherings and passive recreational opportunities, tranquil river front walking trails and an amphitheater.
In April 2017, City Council approved Tega Cay Forever Committee, to serve as a fundraising arm for Catawba Park. In December 2017, Tega Cay Forever received approval from the Internal Revenue Services to operate as a 501(c)3. Tega Cay Forever has been a part of fundraising efforts such as the Forever 1982 Campaign, Taste of York County, Corporate Business Gala and the Memorial Day 5K. In addition to these efforts they have hired Lemmonds Design to market the Facility.
In 2019 the City Council also voted to set aside impact fees to provide a revenue stream to fund Catawba Park. This funding is expect to provide approximately $4 million toward the $15 million total cost. Additional funding is being sought through community partnerships, donations, naming rights, grants and public funds in order to complete the park.
At the January 19, 2016, meeting, the City Manager presented the scope of work and a not to exceed price of $465,000 which will include developing designs and construction documents for the baseball/softball complex as well as preliminary engineering design for 39 acres owned by Duke Energy. The scope of work can be viewed here. In 2017, the City entered into long term lease agreements with Clear Springs and Duke Energy finalizing the 62 acres needed for the park. A concept design (shown below) was created and engineer design work is currently underway for Phases I & II of the project.
In April 2017, City Council recognized the need to fund the ongoing operations and capital improvements of existing City-owned parks along with the creation of new facilities in the future. They did so by creating Tega Cay Forever, a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity whose MISSION is to enhance the quality of life in the City of Tega Cay by promoting and providing parks, open space and community events for citizens of all ages which strengthen and unite our community. The group is organizes several fundraising events including the Forever 1982 Campaign, Taste of York County, Corporate Business Gala and the Memorial Day 5K.
