Through the Memorial Tree Fund, you can become a partner in
the reforesting of Tega Cay.  A $25 gift will plant a single tree in
honor of someone you love.  Birthdays, anniversaries, memorials
and other special occasions may be chosen to hone your special
loved one.
Your gift will grow in beauty and value, while enhancing the
city's environment.  Most of all, your gift will be a living legacy to
our City, creating an attractive and pleasant place to live, work
and plan.
An acknowledgment letter will be sent to the person honored
and to the contributor if requested.  Also, a Certificate of
Dedication will be mailed after the tree is planted if requested.
To participate, please complete the
form and bring it to the
Administration Office with your contribution or mail to:

Plant a Living Legacy
As the cooler months arrive, many are tempted to start topping their trees.  "Crape Murder" is soon start
popping up around town.  Bradford Pears are chopped to the trunk, leaving the mere memory of the
grand tree it was the previous spring.  Here are 8 reasons why you should DROP THAT CHAINSAW:
  • STARVATION- Topping can remove so much of
the crown that it can temporarily cut-off an
    older tree's food-making ability.
  • SHOCK- A tree's crown acts as an umbrella,
helping shield the tree from direct sun.
Removing it can cause scalding.  There can
also be harm to nearby shrubs and plants that
rely on the tree for shade.
  • UGLINESS- A topped tree loses the shape and
    character of its species
  • RAPID NEW GROWTH- Topping can cause a
tree to grow rapidly, forming a far denser
    crown
  • INSECTS & DISEASE- Stubs left by topping are
left vulnerable to insects and spores, allowing
    the spread of disease.
  • COST- Topping may cost less in the short run,
but homeowners will likely have to deal with
more cost down the road, including removing
    the tree if it dies.
  • WEAK LIMBS- The wood of new limbs that
sprout is more weakly attached than the old
    limbs.
  • TREE DEATH- Some older trees are less
tolerant of topping than others.  Beeches, for
example, do not sprout easily after sever
pruning, which can lead to death.
